TEACHING YOGA AS A LESSON IN YOURSELF

What you learn about YOU whilst teaching others..

reflection teaching yoga learning you

I'm not often lost for words, but after reading and editing and rereading this week's Introducing You feature,

But this week, I'm not sure I have much to say but this:

There is still so much we have to learn about teaching yoga.

How we care for our students.

How best to cue Prasarita Padottanasana.

What are the ethical and cultural implications of teaching this practice.

Where do we need to set boundaries with students, when we can give ourselves a break, how we can figure out what is the perfect amount of classes to teach per week to avoid burning out.

The questions, the teachings, they never stop.

And in this, so much is still to be learnt about our deepest selves.

This is the beauty of teaching yoga.

We aren't just allowing our students to learn more about themselves, but we are in a practice every day of learning more about who we are, when teaching, too.

If you haven't already, this week would be the week where I'd strongly encourage you to read our newest feature in the Journal.

An enlightening read for yoga teachers and students alike - I know that there is always something to learn about who we are (and the beautiful impact of yoga) from the words of this brilliant individual.

This week’s recs

Alli Black and I, who featured in this week's Introducing You, share a love for this inspiring book of poetry (ps. check out this online bookstore that isn't amazon.)

Yung Pueblo

My favourite oracle deck. For those moments when I'm in need of reminder of the woman/human I'm wanting to be.

Soulful Woman Guidance Cards

It's really surprising to me that this is the emergence of the UK's first yoga union. ‘There’s a deeply ingrained false belief that it is ‘unyogic’ to ask for adequate compensation. It’s a performative silence that – together with cavalier attitudes towards our rights as workers on the part of some studio owners – increases the pressure and stress on yoga teachers to pay our bills and make a decent living from our work.’

The Guardian

'Inspiration to rest. Savasana is an asana in and of itself. Set up whenever you feel like it - for 10 mins do nothing.'

Boutique classes, Soulcycle and the like, are dying a death. But where do our precious yoga studios fit into all this?
